Biophilia refers to the idea that humans have an instinctive bond with nature. Biophilic Design takes that bond and strives to bring it into places where a there is separation between humans and nature. Sterile office environments that are essentially nothing but a lit cave are prime candidates for Biophilic Design.

But what can you do in an office with no natural light or access to it? The Sky Factory is one company working to bring Biophilic Design into the mainstream through the use of Luminous SkyCeilings, which are used to “mitigate stress and fatigue, improve cognitive function and productivity, and improve wellness in offices devoid of daylight.”

Sky Factory Luminous SkyCeilings™ are virtual skylights – photographic illusions of real sky views that trigger beneficial "relaxation responses" for mind and body. They are modular and can be designed to any rectangular shape, or arrangement of shapes, defined by the suspended ceiling grid. Luminous SkyCeilings are scalable – from a single 2’x2’ square to as large as you want – easy to install, and work with existing grid systems.

One of those unique and innovative installations, you will find at the Austerlitz Railway Station in Paris, France. Through a large, four-part, Luminous SkyCeiling installation in the waiting area, travellers are pleasantly surprised by the always blue virtual sky.
