Munich Airport wished to offer way-guiding services to its 40 million strong passenger traffic while being in full control of the data and the update cycle. The airport operator teamed up with a local Munich university spin-off to create its own solution. NavVis developed its own 3D mapping equipment, trolley and services. As a result of this collaboration Munich Airport authority now owns its own trolley and is able to digitise any indoor location. Felix Reinshagen (NavVis) and Thomas Kallmayer (Munich Airport) will talk about the „Enhanced Customer Services: Indoor Navigation through 3D mapping“ at OVAB DSS Europe 2015.
Interestingly, the main purpose of the data gathered will not only be way-guiding but it will also act to support remote maintenance. Ongoing constructions or technical installations can very easily digitised, thus offering a wealth of information (current maps, photos and 3D mappings). Service crews are now able to visually inspect technical installations or construction areas from remote locations, evaluating and remotely fixing selected faults.
This represents an insight into how popular web-based services inspire new B2B solutions. It is an interesting solution complementing digital signage. The benefits are not only evident for airports but also for shopping malls, train-stations and large retailers.
