Barcelona | Dynascan is considered the high brightness expert – no display manufacturer focuses on sunlight-readable displays like the US company with Taiwanese owners. At ISE, invidis spoke with President Alan Kaufmann about the latest technology trends, green signage and how it is all connected with Walt Disney.
Today, Dynascan is the only global display provider that specializes exclusively in high-brightness digital signage. Even though Korean competitors may be selling more high-brightness displays, Dynascan CEO Alan Kaufmann sees his company in pole position technologically. „Unlike other vendors, we develop our digital signage products as high-brightness displays from the beginning. We are the specialists for bright environments.“ For other manufacturers, sunlight-readable displays are a down-stream development of existing screens.
Dynascan’s sole focus on high-brightness pay-off in long-term operation. „Our sunlight-readable displays lose less than 10% of their brightness after five years.“ Decreasing brightness is one of the biggest challenges of specialty displays equipped with extremely bright backlights. Because it’s fairly easy to deliver high brightness at the start of installation by just turning the backlight to the maximum, but much more difficult to keep the high levels as many displays quickly lose luminosity over their lifetime.
Green Signage
In addition to brightness, thermal management is hugely important to the longevity of displays. Whether behind a store window or freestanding unprotected in a public space, sunlight-readable digital signage screens must withstand extreme temperatures. „Dissipating heat requires high-tech engineering such as special aluminum otherwise only used in aviation.“ This allows Dynascan to engineer sunlight-readable digital signage solutions that consume significantly less power than separately developed display totems.
Dynascan is particularly proud of the new outdoor screens that have been specially developed for DooH use at public transit stops. The 86″ and 75″ displays are completely encapsulated from external influences and are thermally controlled via two separate cooling circuits. Dynascan seems to have struck a chord with the DooH industry with the new series, „because the interest from network operators is huge.“
Dynascan’s outdoor specialists are not the first to develop dedicated DooH solutions with full IP and vandalism protection. Display military specialist LG MRI has been offering similar solutions for more than a decade – but at staggering prices. Dynascan believes it is ideally positioned with its completely new developed DooH series. „The new series incorporates our know-how of the last 15 years. Dynascan does not develop an outdoor totem around a screen, but the screen is designed from day 1 for outdoor use.“ Dynascan offers the new outdoor series as both a double-sided solution or as a single screen with a six-sheet poster frame on the back.
Sweet Spot Touchscreen
Smaller double-sided 65″ screens with touchscreens are also in big demand among Dynascan customers, especially for smart city projects. „Revitalizing downtowns has been on the agenda worldwide since the pandemic. To this end, many smart city providers are investing on digital neighborhood promotion touchpoints to promote local brick-and-mortar retailers . „DooH screens combined with touchscreens and sensors hit exactly the smart city nerve of the time.“
Inspired by Disney
Dynascan started as a retail LED specialist. At the time, DV-LED was the only visual solution with sufficient brightness for installations in direct sunlight. But Walt Disney was looking for a solution with better resolution for its stores, Fine Pixel Pitch LEDs were still a distant dream at that time. So Dynascan went to work to develop their first sunlight-readable displays. The first high-brightness digital signage specialist was born.
