Air pollution in city centers is not only being discussed publicly in New Delhi or Stuttgart. Many cities are trying to improve air quality with natural and technical solutions, increasingly Digital-out-of-Home advertising touchpoints offer dual purposes – a combined digital poster and air filter.
Out-of-Home media owner are testing how digital advertising structures in public spaces can offer added value by filtering the surrounding air. German OoH market leader Ströer and filter manufacturer Mann+Hummel presented a green DooH solution at the Smart City Expo in Barcelona. The filter manufacturer integrated its standalone filter cube solution into a public video totem. Space is limited in public spaces, especially in underground metro stations or roadside at busy traffic junctions. The modular filter cube helps to improve air quality. The filters can also be integrated directly into static billboards or transit shelter.
One of the advantages of high-performance filter- similar solutions are also offered by Gore – that they can be used decentral to clean ambient air. The filter can bind more than 80 percent of NO2 and O3 as well as particulate matter. The core solution is a new combi-filter, which contains a filter layer that retains particulate matter. Due to the large surface area of the additional highly porous activated carbon media, NO2 and O3 are absorbed with particularly low-pressure loss and energy consumption.
Depending on the requirements, several filter cubes can be mounted on top of each other in a modular system to form a filter column. A filter column with three filter cubes is capable of cleaning 14,500 cubic meters of ambient air every hour. The cubes are also equipped with intelligent sensors. They continuously record air and weather data as well as pollutant emissions. The data is transferred directly to a cloud. In this way, the filter system controls itself depending on operating and environmental conditions and saves energy because the fan only runs when needed.
